What you should know about Afft
This all started when one of our founding members suspected that a man standing next to the road may be hungry. She drove home, made him a sandwich and took it to him. In 2004, this same heart was expressed in providing meals to 50 children in one informal settlement. 12 years later we are helping to provide food security to close to 17 000 children in a variety of programmes. Volunteering your time to visit the schools, creches and Orphaned families we support once a month. We aim to provide nutrition to school children in order to promote concentration and learning. We provide regular meals for children to enable them to concentrate in class and study well. According to the Children’s Institute at UCT the effects of poor nutrition on children are far reaching. It is estimated that more than 200 million children under five years globally will not realise their full cognitive development due to poverty, lack of proper care, poor health and inadequate nutrition. In Johannesburg, 43% of the poor face starvation and malnutrition. Researchers believe the figure could be higher and every day thousands of children go hungry. One of the most well managed and dedicated organizations aimed at ensuring that children are given an opportunity to grow and reach their God given potential. For the last 15 years, Community Ministries has hosted a holiday club for the children of Muldersdrift and surrounding areas. It is held during the first week of the June /July holiday. AFFT has partnered with Community Ministries for the past two years to provide food for the children. This year we would like to partner with Community Ministries again and provide food for the 600 children expected at the 3 sites. At AFFT we love to see people taking the initiative to make a difference in uplifting their communities. Our Spring project is aimed at helping our schools and preschools to make the most of their vegetable gardens, for the benefit of our children. Next time you are out shopping or gardening, please keep in mind that AFFT will be collecting and distributing vegetable seeds and seedlings to the ECD Centres and schools where we are involved. Your contributions will be greatly appreciated and will add direct value to the well-being and health of our children. Gardening implements, compost, potting soil, hose pipes, etc would also be appreciated, for maintaining the vegetable gardens.
