What you should know about Berard Auditory Integration Training
When we had to come up with a name for our unique digital auditory retraining technology, we had to think long and hard. breathe air as are the largest member of the dolphin family (delphinidae)are fast, agile, gregarious, purposeful and excellent communicators (more about that later). Orcas seem to stand out in the marine world as ultra-unique creatures and so we chose them as our symbol to represent the population of people our technologies target in a ultra-hopeful way! We liked it that orcas were so agile in water, with their powerful flukes and that they were of the best and fastest swimmers in the marine world! In order to hunt successfully in groups, orcas make use of their extra-ordinary fine sense of hearing, often swimming in total, vigilant silence, just listening, using their own blows and echo-location to confuse their prey. So, what on earth (and in the sea) does this have to do with our newly developed technology? Thinking of Orcas, something inside us resonated with the concept of the marine mammal, the Orca as a unique symbol of the HOPE that there is in community and in sound therapies. People with auditory processing problems often stand out in a crowd. They can be identified by the invisible, yet a characteristically outstanding feature, namely that they hear sound so differently: often too loudly, often with significant distortion, often maniacally worrisome, or sometimes they lose sounds, misinterpret them or are shrouded in a world where most sounds are absent. Sound and balance go hand in hand and sound brings balance like the two pectoral fins stabilize the Orca in the water and give them speed and agility. So for us, Orcas are a critical symbol representing the possibility of restored unity through communal collaboration, newly established communication which fosters sense of inclusion, belonging to a family and of hope, which we could develop if only we can break through those sound barriers which isolate our listeners ! Knowing this about Orcas, it reminded us of the closed-in wolds of people with auditory processing problems and how sounds are often confusing to people with auditory disabilities or difficulties and how sound, if used effectively, has the potential to be a powerful tool to help (re-) establish communication, efficiency and interaction to the lives of those trapped by (excessive) sound (or the lack of it). For us Orcas are the flagship species symbolizing that there is hope and facilitated communication possible for people with auditory processing problems. There is a key reason why we are so in awe of Orcas as creatures and adopted them as our symbol of hope: they represent the fierce and innate tenacity of the human spirit, particularly of the heart of a mother, to find answers for her off-spring ! Often children with autism and severe disabilities, are the life-long wards of their parents. This struck a sad chord in us, namely that they often remain reliant on their mothers till late in life or for the rest of their lives. Science tells us that neuro-cognitive disabling conditions affect the males of the human species up to four times more than these affect females. Boys are at such a high risk in our society today due to the more than 80 thousands chemicals and plethora of toxins in the environment! Orcas are captivating in the sense that they teach us how sound regulates relationships, how a family can either be regulated or dys-regulated by sound; that sound is a social-integrator and that it is a means of forging life-long bonds as well as of sharing emotional proximity. We believe that our sound-technologies will bring harmonious and integrated well-being. Studies of published research confirm this, as well as research emerging from the newly emerging field of Bio-Acoustics.
