Claire Ashford has been practising in the field of speech therapy for many years. Based at the Mayo Clinic, apraxia, dysphagia, her private practice offers specialised care for individuals presenting with aphasia, alongside the Flora Hospital, dysarthria and cognitive language disorders. She has a particular interest in working with individuals who have communication and swallowing difficulties as a result of a stroke, traumatic brain injury or a degenerative disorder. She works closely with a team of occupational therapists, physiotherapists and psychologists to provide the individual and their family with the support they require in the process of recovering from a stroke or head injury.

Intervention is provided on the ICUs and general wards in close collaboration with a team of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and psychologists. Home visits can be arranged for specific individuals based on the needs of the individual and their family members. Acute hospital patients are usually seen within 24 hours. We have a special interest in treating individuals who experience communication and swallowing difficulties as a result of a stroke, traumatic brain injury or degenerative disorder. But, when someone is suddenly faced with the stark reality of no longer being able to express their thoughts, understand a joke, read a novel, write a shopping list or eat a home-cooked meal, help is required. Our ability to communicate, in all its various forms, is essential in shaping who we are as human beings. Similarly, our ability to enjoy a cup of tea and our favourite meal is part of how we socialise and connect with our family and friends. The aim of Speech Rehab is to assist in any way possible in improving these aspects of an individual's life in order to maintain a connection with family, friends and the environment in general. The aim is to assist in rehabilitating an individual to reach their maximum potential. The process of therapy is an exciting and challenging journey for all involved. It is an incredibly rewarding process that is unique to each individual as no head injury or stroke is the same. By working closely with the Speech Therapist, the journey of recovery evolves and the individual is able to regain a new level of independence and a new found ability to function in the world.
