For more than 30 years, researchers worldwide have been studying myopia in children and experimenting with modalities to slow or stop its progression. There is a spectacle laboratory on the premises that makes it convenient when you want to re-use your own frame, but cannot go without it. We also take on most kinds of spectacles repairs, adjustments and lens transfers while you wait. We are actively involved in Myopia Control for near-sighted children. This is an exciting and critically important new chapter in optometry. Myopia most often occurs because the eyeball is too long and light rays from a distant point are focused at a place in front of the retina, forming a blurred image on the retina. Normally the cornea is smooth and equally curved in all directions and light entering the cornea is focused equally in all directions. In astigmatism, the front surface of the cornea is curved more in one direction than in the other; light is focused so objects being viewed are partially clear and partially blurry all at once. Progressive Myopia: a type of nearsightedness that typically affects children and teens. Myopia in which the correction to clear vision increases over time periods less than one year and in amounts greater than ½ diopter of power. The genetic component of parents who themselves are nearsighted. Recent research at the University of Houston has shown progressive myopia to be linked with the poor focusing of light on the back of the eye (the retina) in areas adjacent to the area of 20/20 vision (the macula) Reading and other close tasks at a distance equal to the length of one’s forearm.
