At O’Brien Design we are able to provide clients with the option to be involved from from A-Z. From casting and painting toy soldiers to restoring cars, there has always been a perfectionist inside of me unsatisfied with anything less than my best. In South Africa, technology was a late party guest, but in a relatively short time has exploded into it’s own. I’m both an engineer and a student of all things code based, specialising in building the engines that affect, alter and hopefully change our world. Each blank page (or screen) offers a whole new world that becomes something that will talk to others in a language that no-one speaks but everyone understands. Graphic design offers me the opportunity to communicate in this way. There is simply nothing that provides satisfaction like filling a blank page with life and language through design. Every single day she would bring along a new magazine for me, with that freshly printed smell still clinging to the pages. Poignant writing is so much more than merely stringing beautifully crafted sentences together, it’s about conveying a feeling that people simply don’t forget. It’s made of solid steel and has a durable, scratch-resistant connector. Holidays like Independence Day give me the excuse (and reminder) to reflect on what I’m doing with my life and what I’ve done since the last milestone, such as New Year. One of the big blessings of living in a democracy is the ability to pursue one’s own path, and the idea that anyone can pick him or herself up by the bootstraps and achieve great things. Of course, survival and success are inescapably connected to work, but we have the luxury of deciding how fun our day-to-day work is going to be. Sometimes that comes as a tradeoff for pay, but spending 1/2 your waking hours doing something you love is often well worth it. And I’m convinced that the people who are best at what they do tend to be the ones that love it the most. I’m not saying anything loads of great thinkers haven’t already said. But sometimes it’s important to remind ourselves why we’re doing what we’re doing, and to take inventory of our dreams. For many of us, Nelson Mandela’s life and words are weaved through the psyche of our lives. Little did we know at the time Nelson Mandela would be released from prison shortly after, and certainly we did not dream at that time that he would become president of South Africa and that he would rise to be a global elder statesman. Living through this period of transition as he moved from prisoner to elder statesman has felt almost surreal. For many, it has contributed significantly to shaping our values, expectations and determination to carry on in the face of seemingly intractable problems. His legacy is an inspiration and his words speak to leadership, courage, fortitude, resilience, humility and humor.
